Chemistry WebVR - Brief

"Chemistry WebVR" is web-based platform to learn about organic chemistry. You can experience important concepts like stereochemistry, molecular geometries, atom orbitals or reactions mechanisms in a virtual reality. It is userfriendly and works direct in your smartphone browser. The target is University courses and advanced high-school levels.

What you need

You only need a smartphone and a pair of VR goggles. Simple Google Cardboards work fine.


We recommend using slightly more advanced "Cardboard" goggles, where you can adjust the position of the lenses (in four directions).

How it works

First, go here and fill in login details. Request by email.

The entry page

This is where you select one of four modules, or read the about.


Navigate and select

It should go directly into VR mode on your smartphone. If not click the goggles icon in the bottom right corner.

In VR you choose scen by focusing on a menu. The cursor turns green when a menu is selected.


The interactions are gaze based. You move between places by focusing on the glowing icosahedrons (red below). Rotate by looking at the arrows, and get information by looking at the "(i)".



Here is a flavor of what is currently implemenented.

Stereochemistry: sample objects like Bromo-chloro-iodomethane, 1-Chloroethanol, 2-Chlorobutane, 1-Phenyletanol and Chlorocyclobutane. Chiral drugs like R/S-Omeprazole, R/S-Citalopram, R/S-Ibuprofen are available, as well as a quiz

Molecular geometries: Butane (gauche and anti), Ethane (eclipsed and staggered), 2-Butene (E and Z), amide (cis and trans), and ring systems like cyclohexane (chair, twisted-boat, boat, twisted-boat, chair) are available.

Atom orbitals: s1, s2, 2px, 2py, 2pz. Hybrid orbital animations: sp, sp2, sp3 and examples like Methane, Ethane and Ethyne.

Reactions mechanisms: the nucleophilic substitutions SN1 and SN2 and E1 and E2 eliminations as fully interactable animations. You can, for example, stop and inspect transition states.

Please note that the content is subject to on-going development.


Please note that Android smartphones work better than iOS. The underlying frame-work is not yet fully prepared for iOS.

For optimal performance set the screen display to full resolution (it’s often not set to that out of the box).

The webpages works perfectly fine also in non-VR mode. That is, teachers (or students) can show and tell on desktops, laptops and projectors.

We have many plans on what to do. Improvements to existing modules and new organic chemistry modules are underway, as well as other subjects (molecular biology, gas kinetics, etc, etc). It is likely that future access will be through personal subscriptions or as part of an institutional license.
